Tips to aid you on your expat journey
There are not any comprehensive lists available that would give you all the details you need to know or about things to do. I have however
lived long enough out of my country to have my own opinion what will help and what will not. If any of these tips will help you and make
your transition period easier I've succeeded.
- familiarize yourself early enough with the idea of moving abroad. Even if nothing has been set yet, early adaptation eases your
way during the transition period
- find out all kinds of things about your new homeland, even if it feels trivial and not important. You are bound to encounter
embrassing situations culturewise sooner and later, and the more you know beforehand, the easier it is for you to adapt. Read at least
one book about the culture and people you will meet. You will not regret it.
- prepare all the official documents you might need well in advance. Delivering documents by courier comes with a pricetag.
- find out what kind of vaccinations you need on your new destination and what is the health situation. Are seasonal diseases
to be expected? Does the destination have moonsoon rains that might bring malaria or other risks?
- spend time with your relatives and friends. There is no telling when you will see them next time.
- gorge on food you love and might not get on your final destination. Ingredients might not be available especially when speaking about
national delicacies.
- above all, remember to enjoy from the experience, not all have the change to live abroad and experience the full spectrum
of feelings it offers!
I have prepared a printable checklist for you to use for your own benefit. You can find it from here.
